’I'm a 32-year-old entrepreneur, writer, husband, and (very novice and retired) ultra-runner who’s a tad obsessed with adventure, life experiments nd learning. I also have a small problem listening to authority. And if we’re talking technical jargon, perhaps you could call me a Career Change Strategist. But I prefer Explorer, Adventurer or Experimenter…
If you haven't heard, Scott was killed in a freak boulder accident while fulflilling one of his lifelong adventure dreams; climbing Mount Kilamanjaro with his wife Chelsea. It was part of a year long trip around the world they set out to do all the while sharing their "live your legend" message. Who would ever have thought it would end this way?
I never met Scott, but like scores of others now writing about the impact of this 32-year old "tad obsessed" guy - I see a theme ... a consistent life message coming from this one guy.
Scott's message: Don's settle for life in a career that doesn't work for you! Find and Do Work You Love!
That message reverberated loud and clear through almost every blog post, TED talk, program and video Scott created.. not to mention almost 150 groups he organized aroudn this theme!
It made Scott stand out!
Why did this make Scott stand out?
Scott was one of the rare people who
1. Knew his life message.
2. Acted on his life message
3. Did work consistent with his life message
And because of that, the world will never be the same.
The hard truth: Most people don't know their life message. They don't do what Scott did.... keep speaking it, sharing it, doing it, risking for it.
No, they're bad people. BUT they don't stand out like Scott Dinsmore did. They don't impact people all over the world like Scott did.
And what I want to tell you... YOU CAN KNOW AND SHARE YOUR LIFE MESSAGE....... IF..... IF.... you do some very simple, doable things to know that message. THEN of course, act on it.
How Can YOU Know Your Life Message?
Here are 3 things you can do..
1. ASK God.
He says He will answer honest asks. And if we don't ask, we won't receive.
The Bible is insanely clear that God invites us to ask: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." (Matthew 7:7)
"Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." (Mark 11:24)
Try this prayer: "God what is my life message?"
It just may happen sooner than you think!
2. ANSWER this "giant mic question"
Yeah, so "what's a giant mic question?" Here it is:
If you were given a microphone to speak with one billion people and had one minute to say something they could all hear.... What would you say?
Of course you'd have to get over huge audience stage fright, if you get that... but think about it. One billlion people giving you their attention. What would you want them to know? Or realize? Or understand?
Write that down!
I actually thought of that question while walking acrossed a packed beach in Florida earlier this year. I saw all kinds of people with all kinds of body shapes, ages, ethnicities and even languages. I thought: "If I could share a message with all of them for one minute, what would I share?"
I thought: "You all are incredibly loved by God! He actually didn't make a mistake when He made you. Your gifts, passions and abilities are just what He created. But, don't settle for not finding or using your gifts! The world needs what you have to offer! Get in the game. Experience the bigger adventure! Now is your time! Get in the game to bring God's work in the world!"
That's me. And so I will use any "mic" I can to get that across until the day I die! (Blogs, podcasts, interviews, videos, coaching, conversations....)
So, how about you? What do you have to say if given the mic?
Try it now even! What comes to mind for you?
3. ANALYZE to the biggest challenges, setbacks or personal mistakes you've had to overcome.
God utlizes His resources well. He won't waste them.
And if we're open to it, it's possible that THE biggest "negatives of our lives" may turn out to be the biggest postives. The biggest ruts may lead to the biggest redemptions.
As Scott Dinsmore explains in his TED talk, he was absolutley feeling stuck, dissatisfied and burnt out in his own career - AND his life message turned out to be "Do What YOU Love!"
So where have you been deeply challenged?
What has been deeply dissatisfying?
What have you been embarrased by or even ashamed of?
Maybe.... just maybe... might how you anwer those be the clues to your own life message?
As always, I would LOVE to hear from you.
